As automobile insurance rates are rising across the country, the state seeing the most significant increases unfortunately is Texas.
Due to a variety of reasons, auto insurance carriers have been forced to keep increasing their rates over the past few years to continue providing coverage within the state.
These are the many reasons why Texas auto insurance agency premiums keep climbing, much to the dismay of drivers throughout the Lone Star State.
1. High Auto Fatality Rates
The first and most significant reason why automobile insurance rates keep climbing in Texas is the high number of auto fatalities occurring each year.
Auto insurance traffic data compiled for the year 2021 reveals that Texas had the highest number of traffic fatalities that year, with 4,498 deaths occurring.
Based on the state’s population of an estimated 29,527,941 residents, that is a fatality rate of 15.23 per 100,000 population.
To illustrate the significance of that number, the state of California with the second-highest fatality rate of 4,285 in 2021 has a population of 39,237,836, for a fatality rate of only 10.92 per 100,000 population.
Texas has 25% fewer residents but experiences 50% more auto fatalities.
Among them were 2,169 driving fatalities involving alcohol, 1,172 involving the failure to use a seatbelt, and 1,568 due to speeding, all of which were higher than those same categories in California.
2. Highest Percentage of Auto Thefts Per Licensed Drivers
Auto theft is another significant issue that auto insurance agencies in the state are dealing with at alarmingly increasing rates.
As of 2023, Texas ranked second in the U.S. for auto thefts, with a reported 115,013 thefts reported to insurance companies.
While this number ends up being only half of the more than 208,000 thefts reported in California, Texas’ numbers far exceed those reported in the next highest state of Florida, which only had 46,213 reported thefts that year.
These numbers have automobile insurance agencies paying exceptional claims amounts each year to reimburse insured owners for their stolen vehicles.
3. High Uninsured Motorist Count
Adding to the issue of rising auto insurance rates is the high number of uninsured motorists driving on Texas roadways.
According to recent data compiled by TxDOT, as many as 3,000,000 or 20% of drivers in the state get behind the wheel without auto insurance protection.
This creates a costly problem for insurance agencies, which are then forced to pay coverage for their customers who end up injured or with vehicle damage after being hit by an uninsured motorist who cannot do so themselves.
Get Affordable Auto Insurance With A Local Insurance Agency
Automobile insurance rates in Texas are higher than they have ever been due to the costly reasons outlined above and how they affect the insurance carriers doing business in the state.
Fortunately, there are ways that drivers with good records can save money on their auto insurance by taking advantage of safe driver discounts and other promotions.
An experienced local auto insurance agency with access to a wide selection of policies and insurance carriers can help drivers find an auto policy that provides the coverage they need at an affordable rate.
